The story follows Laura Simmonds and her consular colleague and friend Alba Ortiz, who fight to protect British nationals in distress in the Catalonia region. The roles played by Laura and Alba blend those of lawyers, consultants, and police officers, and their diplomatic skills are put to the test in resolving various crises. The series begins with the mysterious death of a young British man who was working as a bar attendant near Barcelona's infamous docks before his death. Although the Spanish police and the British Foreign Office consider it a tragic accident, Laura supports the grieving father Colin, who is convinced that something more terrible occurred the night his son died. As new evidence emerges and a murder investigation unfolds, Laura and Alba uncover links between the bar attendant's death, organized crime, and the British security services. Laura is determined to expose the secrets that both the British and Spanish governments go to great lengths to bury, and her pursuit of justice places her in real danger.
