 Synopsis
Also known as "Tarzan, the Ape Man," it is the first Tarzan film made during the sound film era. The male lead is Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, who pairs with Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane, creating a classic hero and heroine duo that caused a sensation in the 1930s. The plot revolves around British girl Jane who, along with her father and boyfriend, travels to Africa in search of an elephant graveyard. Along the way, Jane encounters danger and screams for help, only to be rescued by Tarzan, who swings out of the trees and brings her to safety in the treetops. From then on, Jane falls irresistibly in love with Tarzan. Later, Jane and her companions are captured by a savage tribe of dwarves and nearly become snacks for gorillas, but thankfully, Tarzan leads a group of elephants to rescue the hostages. Director W.S. Van Dyke captures the enchanting allure of unrestrained primitive life, and the combination of location shooting and forest sets is almost indistinguishable. Due to the film's commercial success at the time, the leading couple went on to shoot a total of six Tarzan films.
