Stephen Mortensen (played by Geoffrey Rush) is an elderly judge who, after a near-fatal stroke that leaves him partially paralyzed, moves into a nursing home. There, Mortensen clashes with another resident, Dave Crealy (played by John Lithgow), who is somewhat of a misfit. He secretly intimidates the residents with a sadistic puppet game called 'Jenna's Rules.' Although intended for dementia therapy, in Crealy's hands, the puppet becomes a tool of torment. As Crealy's actions escalate, Mortensen must battle against his aging body and mind to put an end to Crealy's reign of terror.
