Edward (played by Johnny Depp) is a robot with a human mind, but he has scissors for hands, living a lonely life in a castle. A cosmetics saleswoman named Peg breaks into the castle and takes him home, introducing him to the world of humans. The naive Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim (played by Winona Ryder), who gradually becomes attracted to Edward's kindness. However, a series of unexpected events cause the neighbors around them to shift their attitude towards Edward from acceptance to rejection. Edward painfully realizes that he always means well but ends up causing harm, and he can't even embrace his own lover. Perhaps, he is destined not to belong to this world.
