Little Soldier Zhang Ga

In the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, in Baiyangdian, Hebei, a mischievous and reckless youth named Zhang Ga (played by Anjisi) witnesses his grandmother being killed by Japanese invaders while trying to protect the Eighth Route Army's escape. He ventures alone to the county town to find the guerrilla squad leader Luo Jinbao (Zhang Ying) in hopes of seeking revenge for his grandmother. However, upon meeting Luo, he mistakes him for a traitor, leading to a farcical misunderstanding. Once the misunderstanding is cleared, Zhang Ga dreams of becoming a little soldier in the Eighth Route Army and desires to own a gun. Unfortunately, in his eagerness to obtain a gun, he not only plays dirty while betting with his friend Pang Dun (Wu Keqin) but also violates discipline by secretly hiding a real gun he confiscated during a battle in a bird’s nest in a tree, resulting in further embarrassment. Zhang Ga does not take these embarrassments lightly; confused, he recruits Pang Dun and heads back to the county town to seek revenge for his grandmother himself. In the county town, he encounters a Japanese officer named Kuitian (Ge Cunzhuang) and a translator (Wang Shu), leading to a battle of wits where they fail to gain anything from Zhang Ga. Through a series of events, Zhang Ga matures from a reckless youth into a true little scout of the Eighth Route Army.
