Gary Cooper won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as a representative of CCC. He portrayed a rural boy from Tennessee, characterized by his simplicity and being a devout believer. He was compelled to participate in World War I, but he refused to kill for religious reasons; however, such a person became an American war hero. This is a uniquely themed war film, where director Howard Hawks explores the nature of war through the perspective of a believer's attitude towards it. The theme is thought-provoking, and therefore, when the film premiered in 1941, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, it caused quite a stir. Even today, it still holds its intellectual and entertainment value.
