The story takes place in the Jiangxi Soviet area after the Red Army's Long March. Young Pan Dongzi (played by Zhu Xinyun) is left with only his mother after his father answered the call to join the Red Army to fight against the enemy. His mother is also an active participant in resisting the enemy, and although Dongzi is only 11 years old, he is determined to grow up and join the Red Army to fight against the Japanese forces. One day, the reactionary landlord Hu Hansan comes to capture Dongzi's mother, and seeing the critical situation, Dongzi's mother decides to stay behind to help the other villagers escape. After throwing two grenades and killing several enemies, Dongzi's mother also dies heroically. Witnessing his mother being killed by the enemy, Dongzi is determined to avenge her. Dongzi begins to use his wit and courage to outmaneuver the enemy, secretly helping the local guerrilla fighters deliver salt and messages. Through his struggle against the enemy, Dongzi gradually matures, and the moment to avenge his mother finally arrives.
