After SkyNet gained independent consciousness, it launched a bloody massacre against the humans who created it. In the years that followed, John Connor (played by Jason Clarke) led his comrades and SkyNet's army of machines in a protracted war. After a critical battle, SkyNet sent a Terminator back to Los Angeles in 1984, intending to kill John's mother, Sarah (played by Emilia Clarke). John then sent his closest comrade—who is also his biological father, Kyle Reese (played by Jai Courtney)—back to the past. As soon as Kyle arrived in Los Angeles, he was attacked by the liquid metal Terminator T-1000 (played by Lee Byung-hun).
