The film is adapted from a novel of the same name, and the story revolves around the investigation of a complex crime. Detective Carson (played by John Travolta) is hired to return to the small town where he once lived to investigate the case. Soon, another murder disrupts Carson's focus, involving his former lover Jayne (played by Famke Janssen) and her daughter. There seems to be a myriad of connections between the two cases, and the hidden secrets of this small town are slowly being uncovered.
