Adam (played by Alec Baldwin), who runs a hardware store, and Barbara (played by Geena Davis) are a very loving couple. Although they have no children, they pour all their love for each other into decorating their home. One day, while the couple is out, they get into a car accident and both die. As ghosts, they are unwilling to leave their home, but because of the divide between the living and the dead, they can only watch helplessly as a new family moves in. The Deetzes, along with Charles, make extensive renovations to the house, and Adam and Barbara try to scare them away with ghostly antics, which prove ineffective. Instead, they attract the attention of the Deetz family's strange daughter, Lydia (played by Winona Ryder), who loves lurking in the darkness. Finding themselves in a difficult situation, the couple seeks the help of an eccentric bio-exorcist named Betelgeuse (played by Michael Keaton), who operates outside the mainstream of the afterlife, according to the guidance of the Handbook for the Recently Deceased, in an effort to reclaim their home...
