Cole (played by Lewis Tan) is a very agile but down-and-out fighter who one day inexplicably finds himself being hunted by the cryomancer Sub-Zero (played by Joe Taslim). With the help of Major Jax (played by Mehcad Brooks) from the special forces, Cole narrowly escapes death and sets out to find a woman named Sonya (played by Jessica McNamee). Later, Cole arrives at the temple of Earthrealm's protector Raiden (played by Tadanobu Asano), where he meets warriors Liu Kang (played by Ludi Lin) and mercenary Kano (played by Josh Lawson), among others, all of whom share a mysterious dragon mark on their bodies. This group is about to undergo extremely rigorous training to fight against the invasion from extraterrestrial enemies and protect the peace of the universe.
