Paul (played by Michel Piccoli) and Camille (played by Brigitte Bardot) are a happy couple, and Paul's work as a playwright ensures that they live comfortably. One day, producer Prokosch (played by Jack Palance) invites the couple to a meeting, where Camille first experiences a terrible emotion known as 'contempt' as she listens to her husband speak endlessly. As time goes on, this feeling not only does not diminish but grows stronger, to the point where she can no longer love her husband as she once did. Meanwhile, the handsome Prokosch catches Camille's attention, and the two grow closer. When the affair is revealed, Paul is furious, but Camille and Prokosch drive off in a luxury car, indifferent to his anger, unaware that a tragic fate awaits them ahead.
