The circus director, Armando (played by Ricardo Montalban), takes in and protects a lonely gorilla named Caesar (played by Roddy McDowall). Under Armando's meticulous care, Caesar gradually grows up, and his relationship with his 'father' Armando becomes very close. A virus ravages the world, leading to the extinction of cats and dogs, and humans who have lost their most loyal friends turn their attention to gorillas, who are remarkably similar to them. Thus, keeping gorillas as pets becomes the new trend. However, humanity's cruel nature subjects these originally gentle and kind gorillas to a life of suffering; they are tortured and abused, forever losing their freedom. Finally, the gorillas decide they can no longer endure this; under Caesar's leadership, they bravely rise up, vowing to overthrow human oppression and rule.
