This drama tells the story of a courtyard in Beijing from the 1960s to the 1990s. He Yuzhu is a cook in the steel factory's cafeteria, known for his kindness and righteousness but also for being outspoken, earning him the nickname "Foolish Zhu." Living in the same courtyard is Qin Huairu, a steel factory worker who is devoted to filial piety and is capable, having one son and two daughters; however, her husband passed away due to an industrial accident, complicating their lives. In the courtyard lives Xu Damao, a film projectionist from the steel factory, who is selfish and is considered Foolish Zhu's rival. There are also three respected old workers in the courtyard, referred to as the "Three Uncles," who mediate any neighborhood disputes that arise. Although Foolish Zhu seems out of touch, he has a kind heart; he not only provides substantial support to Qin Huairu's family but also takes care of elderly Granny Long, who is lonely and without family. Through his interactions with the neighbors, Foolish Zhu matures, taking on the responsibilities and duties of a man. With the winds of reform and opening up, Foolish Zhu opens a restaurant and transforms the courtyard into a nursing home, living happily and harmoniously with all his "neighborhood family."
