In 1933, the Red Army arrived in Yilong, Sichuan, to establish a base in Sichuan and Shaanxi. Zhang Side and his friends from the same village bravely stormed the National Army's fortress at Jinchengzhai to enlist. They were recognized by the independent regiment commander Chen Baoming and battalion commander Tan Genhong and joined the Red Army. After undergoing rigorous training, Zhang Side joined the Salt Sharp Knife Company and successfully delivered intelligence. During the battle against the Sixth Encirclement Campaign, he witnessed the sacrifice of Commander Chen and other comrades, realizing that true Red Army soldiers must always be concerned for the people. While serving as a messenger at military headquarters, he frequently completed intelligence delivery missions, boldly commandeering enemy boats to seize machine guns, providing support for the troops to cross the Jialing River. On the Long March, he rescued people in the marshes. During the Battle of Shanchengbao, he was seriously injured and sent for recuperation. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, due to his outstanding performance, he was assigned to serve as a bodyguard beside Chairman Mao and earned Mao's recognition and praise for his diligent hard work. During a charcoal burning mission, Zhang Side unfortunately lost his life, and Chairman Mao personally attended his memorial service and delivered a speech titled 'Serve the People'.
