After a catastrophic nuclear explosion in New York City, eight strangers—Josh (Milo Ventimiglia), Mitch (Michael Biehn), Marilyn (Rosanna Arquette), Sam (Rosanna Arquette), Darwin (Courtney B. Vance), Eva (Lauren German), Adrian (Ashton Holmes), and Bobby (Michael Eklund)—hide in the basement of an apartment building. Suddenly, a group of armed personnel in nuclear and chemical protective suits appears, abducting a young girl among the survivors and preparing to kill the rest. The survivors fight back and kill the armed personnel. However, the basement door is sealed by the armed personnel from the outside, trapping the people inside. As time passes, claustrophobia turns this shelter into a cage, and people begin to despair, suffering psychological distortions and committing acts that are unimaginable to ordinary individuals.
