The Mind Force and President Clark's government discovered shadow ships buried in the solar system and began to utilize the advanced technology of these ships. The growing exclusivism and totalitarianism of the Clark administration led to the declaration of martial law under the pretext of military incidents. This sparked the Martian Independence War, as Mars had long maintained tense political relations with Earth. Babylon 5 also declared independence from Earth, and several outer colonies of Earth's alliance followed suit. In response, the Earth Alliance attempted to recapture Babylon 5 by force, but this attack was repelled with the help of the Minbari, who allied with the space station to combat the rising shadow threat.
