Jia Baoyu (played by Leslie Cheung) is the only male heir of the Jia family. Surrounded by a group of cousins and maids, Baoyu naturally acquires the habit of flirting with women. He spends his days captivated by beauty, yet he remains untarnished by it, with only one woman occupying his heart: the frail, sentimental Lin Daiyu (played by Huang Xingxiu). Unfortunately, the Jia family prefers the capable and refined Xue Baochai (played by Shen Xingni), who can manage both the drawing room and the kitchen. To match Baoyu with Baochai, the scheming Wang Xifeng (played by Zhang Ling) devises a scheme of deception. On the wedding night, Baoyu is overjoyed thinking he is marrying Daiyu, only to discover that under the red veil sits Baochai. Meanwhile, the forsaken Daiyu, believing she has been abandoned, is heartbroken and dies. Grief-stricken, Baoyu defies his family's objections, shaves his head to become a monk, and ultimately enters the Buddhist path.
