The story this season still revolves around five main characters. Matthew (Jason Segel), who has been in love for 9 years with Lily (Alyson Hannigan), finally decides to get married. While they are busy preparing for the wedding, the bride-to-be Lily abruptly leaves for San Francisco to study art, forcing Matthew to cancel the wedding. Three months later, Lily returns to New York wanting to reconcile with Matthew, but will the heartbroken Matthew forgive her? On the other hand, Ted (Josh Radnor) and Robin (Cobie Smulders), who have mutual feelings for each other, go through various events and twists before finally understanding their true feelings, leading them to decide to be together. Meanwhile, the playboy Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) continues to enjoy his single life, but he remains mysterious in other aspects.
