Film director Niccolò Farra has just divorced and is facing a creative crisis. He is dating a girl named Mavi, while another man is also pursuing her. Niccolò is preparing to shoot a love movie but has been unable to choose a leading actress. To evade the other man's pursuit, he and Mavi drive to the countryside, but neither of them understands their feelings and relationship. Mavi later goes missing, and Niccolò cannot find her. Niccolò continues searching for a leading lady and meets Ida, with whom he begins to date. Niccolò shares many stories about himself and others, including Mavi. Ida helps Niccolò find Mavi's address, but when he finally manages to locate her, he discovers she is living with another girl. Niccolò marries Ida, and they go on their honeymoon to a cold, lonely beach in winter. Niccolò says what he wants is solitude. Upon returning to the hotel, Ida reveals that she is pregnant, but the child is not Niccolò's. Niccolò leaves Ida and returns to his room alone, sitting on the windowsill, thinking of himself as a small planet flying through the universe to observe how matter is distributed in the solar system.
