The Nationalist army camp commander Huang Huai'en (played by Zhang Xiaojun) withdraws his troops from the Chujia ferry just before the People's Liberation Army launches the crossing of the Yangtze River, retreating to Jiangnan. Before leaving, he tells the landlord, Chu Laoda, that he intends to marry Chu's daughter, Hehua (played by Zhang Lingzhi), and leaves behind a family heirloom jade bracelet as a token. That evening, Hehua encounters the People's Liberation Army's company commander Liu Zhenshan (played by Chen Long) who has come to scout, and they fall in love at first sight. Soon, Liu Zhenshan leads his troops to the Chujia ferry to prepare for the crossing with all their might. Meanwhile, Huang Huai'en, who is stationed at the Shitou Mountain on the opposite bank, remains immersed in his fantasy of defeating the crossing PLA and marrying Hehua amidst his preparations for battle. The fate of everyone points to the moment of the river crossing. That moment finally arrives — a million heroic troops cross the great river!
