Francis is a tax investigator, and at this moment, he is facing the darkest time of his life. His wife has cheated on him, and his daughter has been harmed. To relieve the pressure of life, he frequently visits a brothel and meets a dancer named Christina (played by Mia Kirshner). Francis is infatuated with Christina, and the reason is simple: she looks just like his daughter. However, the hotel manager, Eric (played by Elias Koteas), is furious about Francis's behavior. He schemes to lure Francis into breaking the hotel's rules and then gives him a beating. Filled with rage, Francis is determined to seek revenge. Coincidentally, a businessman named Thomas (played by Don McKellar) is caught by Francis for tax evasion. Francis uses Thomas to draw Eric out of the hotel while he waits at the entrance, and a tragedy is about to unfold.
