In an apartment room that is likely over 40 years old, a struggling student named Issunbashi is desperately trying to finish a report. The room is bleak, with nothing but a long-used futon, a chabudai (low table), and a bookshelf. Issunbashi's stomach growls. Having not eaten anything since yesterday, he faints and collapses. In his dream, an old man who resembles a hermit appears. This man tells Issunbashi, his descendant, that he will grant him the power to bring good fortune. When Issunbashi wakes up, he realizes something is different. To his surprise, his body has shrunk to the size of a single inch. He twists and stretches, trying to return to his original size, but it's futile. Exhausted, Issunbashi is lying limp when the landlord's daughter enters the room holding a pot...
