The blind masseur Ashi appears ordinary, yet he is a highly skilled swordsman. Although he has various bad habits, he inherently possesses a kind and upright character, harboring a deep hatred for evil. One day, while traveling across the country, he arrives at Masakado Hongo in Shimotsuma, where he stays at the place of the gangster Sugorō Hongo (played by Ryuji Shimada), with whom he has previously met. At this moment, Sugorō is in conflict with a gang led by Shigeru Sasagawa (played by Ryuji Shida), and tensions are running high. Sasagawa has taken in a down-and-out samurai named Heijō Sake (played by Shigeru Takamatsu), who becomes friends with the equally upright Ashi. However, the two must face the brutal situation of being on opposite sides, with swords drawn... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name in the essay collection "Futokoro Techo" by Hiroshi Kubo and is the first installment of the "Zatoichi Series."
