This is a society without sadness, fear, pain, and loneliness; however, there is also no memory, emotion, color, or music. The community leaders hold absolute power here, fully arranging people's work, lives, and even emotions. Young Jonas (played by Brenton Thwaites) is selected to become the so-called 'Receiver of Memory.' He must follow the previous Receiver (played by Jeff Bridges) to learn various knowledge and skills to deal with the challenges he will soon face. As the Receiver of Memory, Jonas will endure all the negative emotions that should exist in society; however, while experiencing pain, Jonas also comes to understand what happiness and love are. When the truth of this 'perfect society' is revealed to Jonas, he feels the urge to escape, but such thoughts are strictly forbidden in this society.
