The underworld assassin Ah Ping (played by Chow Yun-fat) is the owner of the Peace Hotel. It is rumored that he possesses exceptional martial arts skills and once single-handedly killed over two hundred bandits. He claims that the Peace Hotel is a "sanctuary" where no gang can provoke or stir trouble for guests, regardless of whom they may have offended, though he does not guarantee their safety after leaving.The arrival of singer Ah Man (played by Yeh Tong) disrupts this underworld rule. Ah Man is being hunted and escapes to the Peace Hotel. She is charming and captivates Ah Ping, who finds himself falling in love and tries to protect her to evade her pursuers.
