Emily (Dakota Fanning)'s mother died in a bathtub filled with blood, leaving the young girl deeply affected and withdrawn. To help his daughter emerge from the gloom, David (Robert De Niro) moved them to the countryside. Here, Emily meets her new friend — Charlie, and they play hide and seek together. However, no one other than Emily knows who Charlie is; he seems to exist in the girl's imagination and appears to be lurking around them.Terrifying events occur one after another, and Emily becomes increasingly disoriented. David gradually realizes the severity of the situation. He begins to meticulously document his daughter’s words and actions in hopes of keeping Charlie away from her. But who exactly is Charlie?
