The story takes place in a poor and dilapidated neighborhood in Naples, Italy, where Lila (played by Ludovica Nasti) and Elena (played by Elisa del Genio) have lived since childhood. Lila was born into an authoritarian family, with her father being a shoemaker. Although Lila is recognized as a genius girl in her class, under the insistence of her father, she ultimately gives up her education and becomes an assistant in the shoe shop. In contrast, Elena continues her studies with the support of her family and teachers. Although she follows a completely different path in life from Lila, Elena's attention is always focused on Lila. At the age of sixteen, Lila marries the wealthy boy Stefano (played by Giovanni Amura) who has been pursuing her, but what awaits her is not a happy married life.
