One day in 2004, judicial rogue Kenta Saeki (played by Haruma Miura) learns at his grandmother's funeral that he shares no blood relation with his grandfather Kenichiro (played by Isao Yamaguchi), and that his real grandfather Kyuuzou Miyakubo (played by Junichi Okada) died long ago during a kamikaze mission at the end of World War II. Shortly after, Kenta is called by his sister Keiko (played by Kazue Fukiishi) to investigate Miyakubo's history. They visit Miyakubo's wartime comrades, only to find many referring to him as 'the greatest coward of the Imperial Navy', claiming he would never engage in battle even while witnessing his comrades perish. The veterans' comments leave the siblings quite disheartened, but as their investigation deepens, they discover Miyakubo possessed extraordinary flying skills, deeply loved his wife (played by Maiko Inoue) and daughter, and vowed to return to his family at all costs. With this belief, Miyakubo willingly sacrifices the dignity of an Imperial soldier, and his approach to life unintentionally influences his fellow comrades. As the veterans share their stories, Kenta watches as his grandfather faces his final moments... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Naoki Hakutani.
