In 1929, Vietnam was a French colony. Jane (played by Jane March) is a 15-year-old French girl studying at a girls' boarding school in Saigon. Whenever there is a holiday, she goes home, where her mother runs a very small school that generates little income. Jane has two older brothers; the eldest, Bill, is a drug addict and a bully, while the second brother, Paul, is naturally timid and often bullied by Bill. One day, Jane bids farewell to her mother as usual and takes the ferry back to school. On the boat, she meets a wealthy young man, Tony (played by Tony Leung), who is sitting in a black luxury car. Tony, the only son of a Chinese millionaire, is attracted to Jane and strikes up a conversation with her. They hit it off. After disembarking, they explore Saigon together and go to a restaurant for Chinese food, with Tony driving her back to school in his car. The next day, just after school, the black car is waiting at the school gate. Jane and Tony quickly fall in love. Tony takes Jane to his mansion, a place often used by wealthy Chinese to keep a mistress. They meet there, bathe, and play.
