During the Meiji period, a man named Nandian Shuuichi (played by Yuurei Ryu) lived a life free of financial worries after inheriting his parents' fortune. His wife, Toko (played by Machiko Kyo), was beautiful and elegant, with an extraordinary demeanor. However, the relationship between the couple seemed strained; Shuuichi was infatuated with his wife to the point of madness, while Toko harbored fear towards him and longed to escape. Shortly thereafter, Toko fell in love with Shuuichi's friend, Kintaro (played by Ryuichi Oura), who ran a dental clinic, leading to an extramarital affair. Sensing his wife's unusual behavior, Shuuichi decided to investigate, but was thwarted by Kintaro. In turn, Kintaro hired detective Kogoro Akechi to investigate Toko to divert attention. Akechi's wife, Fumi (played by Mari Hoshino), volunteered to assist, but during the investigation, she discovered that this love triangle was sinking deeper into a quagmire of despair. This film is adapted from the novel "The Man Who Lost his Wife" by Edogawa Rampo.
