 Synopsis
In the mid-18th century, the French people were enjoying the pleasures brought by war under the leadership of King Louis XV. Due to years of war leading to a sharp decrease in troops, the army had to recruit young men from all over. The handsome youth, Fangfang (played by Gérard Philipe), stranded in a small town, became involved with a local girl. To escape her father's forced marriage, he had no choice but to join the army. Adeline (played by Gina Lollobrigida), the daughter of the recruiting sergeant, predicts that Fangfang will become a general and marry the king’s daughter. On his way to enlist, Fangfang indeed encounters the princess, Marguerite, who gifts him a tulip. From that moment on, he is infatuated with the princess and fails to notice the feelings that have developed over time with Adeline. To see the princess, he sneaks into the palace and causes a major incident, prompting Adeline to risk her life to save him, allowing him to showcase his talents behind enemy lines. Ultimately, the lovers unite, and the original prophecy comes true. This film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1952 Berlin Film Festival and the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
