Zhang Cuishan (played by Wu Zhenyu) sets off from a deserted island with his wife and son Zhang Wuji (played by Jet Li) to celebrate his master's 80th birthday. On the way, they are ambushed, and Zhang Wuji is struck by the Ice Palm. At Wudang Mountain, both Zhang Cuishan and his wife are forced to death by various sects, and Zhang Wuji can no longer practice martial arts; he can only survive on the true energy provided daily by Zhang Sanfeng. Zhang Sanfeng's actions provoke jealousy from Song Qingshu (played by Zou Zhaolong), who teams up with the Emei disciple Zhou Zhiruo (played by Li Zhi) to deal with Zhang Wuji. When he learns that Mongolian princess Zhao Min (played by Zhang Min) has plotted to have the six major sects of the martial world attack Guangming Peak in an attempt to annihilate the Ming Cult, Zhang Wuji is determined to go through fire and water to save the Ming Cult.
