During the anti-Japanese war, there was a ragtag army made up of various characters known as the newly formed Third Regiment, led by the former county head Duan Renyi (played by Lei Kesheng). To train this unruly mob, the Kuomintang sent two professional soldiers, Chief of Staff Fang Xiangong (played by Yuan Yuan) and Staff Officer Tan (played by Tan Zengwei), and they were accompanied by radio operator Bai Jiefen (played by Gong Zhu) to maintain communication with higher authorities. Due to the chaotic composition of the troops, various disciplinary violations occurred frequently, and after some rectification, there were slight improvements. With a formidable enemy pressing forward, the main Nationalist forces retreated and ordered the new Third Regiment to stay and resist, with anticipated disastrous consequences. The enemy was strong while we were weak, and Fang Xiangong urgently requested reinforcements from above, but the higher-ups found excuses to ignore him, leaving the new Third Regiment to fight alone with heavy casualties. Duan Renyi then ordered the three sent by headquarters to withdraw; however, they were ambushed by a disciplinary suppression team on the way, and only Bai Jiefen managed to escape back. Duan Renyi announced the disbandment of the troops to let everyone escape on their own, but was met with opposition from his own allies...
