The mute disciple of Shaolin (played by Jackie Chan) learns martial arts to avenge his father's death, starting with fetching water and chopping wood, enduring a tough training of internal skill basics. Scenes of him training in the Wooden Man Alley often appear in his dreams, reminding him of the brutal murder of his father and the comforting words of Master Wu Mei, which keep him persevering through exhaustion. The mute disciple discovers the old strange man Fa Yu locked up in the forbidden area of Shaolin. Unlike the Shaolin monks, Fa Yu feels gratitude for the mute disciple's care and teaches him martial arts, even though the disciple is not yet qualified to learn Shaolin techniques. During this time, the mute disciple's senior brother enters Wooden Man Alley but returns defeated.
