 Synopsis
This is Stanley Kubrick's first feature film. The screenplay was written by his high school classmate, poet Howard Sackler, and the funding for the film was raised by Kubrick himself, mostly borrowed from his father, uncle, and friends. Like Kubrick's later films, this work is filled with surrealistic symbolism, so only one art film distributor was willing to release and screen it. Kubrick considered this film to be merely a practice work; he only agreed to private screenings and repeatedly tried to destroy copies of it. Nevertheless, the film received some positive reviews from critics, especially regarding its cinematography.
