In the spring of 1946, the 'Tokyo Trials' were held to adjudicate Japanese war criminals, with judges from eleven victorious nations gathering at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The focus of the trial was on 'war crimes,' which had emerged alongside the Nuremberg Trials. For the first time, the act of 'war,' which had previously been considered legal under international law, was recognized as a criminal act, and the responsibility of national leaders was pursued. The defense argued that the concept of 'war crimes' constituted ex post facto law and should not be acknowledged. In court, the opinions of the judges stood in opposition. What initially seemed like a quick resolution to the trial showed signs of prolonged and chaotic proceedings. The private activities of judges residing in Japan and the opinions of those around them became entwined in the courtroom battles. In the autumn of 1948, after two and a half years of trial, the eleven judges finally delivered their verdict. At the moment of deciding the fate of the defendants, the most fundamental question for humanity—'Can humanity adjudicate war?'—also reached a final answer.
