Seven-year-old Olive, who wears glasses and has a little belly, dreams of overnight fame, firmly believing that one day she can be crowned Miss America. Her father, a lecturer selling success courses, believes that 'there are only two types of people in the world: the successful and the failures,' and he sells his 'Nine Steps to Success' everywhere; her brother, a boy with autism who idolizes Nietzsche, swore to not speak to his family for nine months to get into flight school; her uncle, who claims to be the best Proust scholar in America, is gay, had his lover and coworkers leave him, is unemployed, attempted suicide, and leads a chaotic life; her grandfather (played by Alan Arkin), a profane, drug-using old rogue who was kicked out of a nursing home; and her mother, the only sane person in this crazy family. With the support of her family, Olive enters the 'Little Miss Sunshine' beauty pageant, and the family embarks on a journey to collectively pursue their dreams. Will Olive get crowned as she wishes? How will the family members overcome their respective crises?
