During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the lay disciple of Shaolin, Hong Xiguan (played by Jet Li), is a member of the Tiandihui society, striving to overthrow the Qing dynasty and restore the Ming dynasty. Hong Xiguan is betrayed by his fellow disciple Ma Ning'er (played by Ji Chunhua), leading to the death of his family at the hands of traitors. Fortunately, his young son Wen Ding (played by Xie Miao) avoids the disaster, and after Hong Xiguan kills Ma Ning'er, he and Wen Ding wander the world. The father and son encounter the con artist Zhu Xiaoqian and her daughter Hong Dou, leading to a series of events. When Shaolin faces calamity, Master Zhi Shan tattoos a treasure map on the backs of five young lay disciples to prevent it from being seized by the court, and discreetly informs Hong Xiguan that he must escort them to the Tiandihui. However, Ma Ning'er, severely injured by Hong Xiguan, does not die but instead transforms into a creature covered in poison and impervious to weapons. He kills the leader of the Tiandihui and pursues the five children...
