In late 16th century Japan, Akechi Mitsuhide launched the Honnoji Incident, killing Oda Nobunaga, who was just one step away from unifying the world. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (played by Eiji Okuda) defeated Mitsuhide and established the Toyotomi regime, bringing a long-awaited peace to the land. Fifteen years into this peaceful era, the notorious thief Ishikawa Goemon (played by Yosuke Eguchi), known for robbing the rich to help the poor, became famous and beloved by the impoverished. On the night of a grand celebration, Goemon sneaked into a wealthy man's home to steal, leading to the death of the wealthy man and his family at the hands of one of the Five Elders, Ishida Mitsunari. It turned out that Goemon had stolen a box containing a shocking secret and then carelessly discarded it. The next day, after learning the details of the previous night, Goemon went to the slums to search for the box, while Ishida Mitsunari sent the ninja Kirigakure Saizo (played by Takahiro Ozawa) to track down the box. A series of fierce battles immediately ensued, but what secret does the box that has caused such bloodshed hide?
