Lawyer Erin (played by Laura Linney) receives a case. A priest is being sued for using religious methods—an exorcism ritual—to treat a girl named Emily, which led to her being delayed in receiving the proper medical treatment for her serious illness. In court, a battle between religion and science begins. The incident started with the terrifying experiences of 19-year-old college student Emily (played by Jennifer Carpenter). While sleeping in her college dorm, she felt an evil spirit invade her, and further horrifying events followed. Emily began to act abnormally; her eyes turned black, her behavior became strange, and she lived in a nightmare filled with torment from demons, unable to control her own will, suffering so much that she wished for death. Her family sought the help of a psychiatrist, but there was no improvement. In desperation, they called in a priest (played by Tom Wilkinson) to investigate, only to learn that Emily was possessed by six ancient demons. Overwhelmed by these demons, her only chance for survival lay in the religious ritual of exorcism. Unfortunately, the priest's exorcism did not save Emily and instead led to accusations against him. Atheists argue that the idea of possession by demons is absurd.
