Rookie pilot Allen Drake joined the famous "Hellcats" squadron right after graduating from Pensacola flight school. Upon arriving at the base, he was forced to abandon his aircraft and jump for safety, but thick fog prevented him from landing, leaving a bad first impression. During his first official sortie, his poor shooting skills led to the "Hellcats" squadron's defeat in an air combat competition. His comrades eventually accepted him, but they felt that Drake had overstepped his bounds because they mistakenly believed he was having an affair with Commander Bill Gary's wife, Lona, during Gary's absence. Drake was now a naval outcast, preparing to resign his commission, but his extraordinary heroism in saving Bill Gary's life turned the situation around.
