During the Tang Dynasty, the secret color porcelain artist Yu Xiu (played by Niu Ben) created a protective statue of Guanyin for the frail Prince Li Yi (played by Nie Yuan) to be worshipped at Mount Wutai. When the statue was completed, he found an abandoned infant girl and adopted her, naming her Lian Mei (played by Li Chun). People said the infant girl arrived alongside the Guanyin statue, which was a sign from heaven, a manifestation of Guanyin on earth. 20 years later, Lian Mei grew into a charming young girl, known for her kindness and compassion, because her adoptive father told her that every passerby might be her biological parents. People also said that Lian Mei's virtuous character was as filled with compassion as Guanyin Bodhisattva. The Japanese envoy, Hui E (played by Nakatsuka Hiroshi), arrives in Tang and, with Lian Mei's assistance, seeks the secret color porcelain Guanyin seated statue in the rain, and finally gets his wish. As Hui E boards the ship to return to Japan, there is a sudden storm while passing by Mount Meicen, causing Hui E and the porcelain Guanyin statue to fall into the sea. Lian Mei, who came to see him off, jumps into the water to rescue them but disappears in the waves. Hui E is heartbroken but sees countless lotus flowers flowing towards the ship, surrounding it and creating a sea of lotus blossoms. He sees Lian Mei rising among the lotus flowers, transforming into a white-clad Guanyin holding a lotus! Hui E realizes the truth and resolutely decides to enshrine this secret color porcelain Guanyin seated statue at Mount Meicen. From then on, Putuo Mountain was established and gradually became a world-renowned Guanyin sanctuary.
