The story takes place during World War II, when the fire of war destroyed the homes that civilians relied on for survival. Left with no choice, they embarked on a journey of escape. During an enemy bombing, five-year-old girl Paulette (played by Brigitte Fossey) witnessed the death of her parents and beloved dog in the explosion. In her fear and shock, Paulette found her puppy's body, and just as she was heartbroken, a boy named Michel (played by Georges Poujouly) appeared before her.Michel was moved by Paulette's tragic fate, and he convinced his parents to adopt the poor little girl and even made a grave for her puppy. However, nothing Michel did could ease Paulette's suffering. Seeing her sad expression, Michel thought of a way. The two children collected the bodies of animals that died in the war and used stolen crosses to make headstones for them. However, the two children did not realize that this kind gesture would ultimately lead to their separation.
