In 1784, Catholicism was introduced to Korea. Lee Seung-hun, together with brothers Jeong Yeok-jong and Jeong Yeok-yong, spread the teachings. The religion was used as a driving force for debates between political parties, and thus faced persecution. During the persecution caused by Sin Yu, Ha Sang and Jeong Eun avoided torture and surveillance, gathered parish residents, and expanded the church's power. Lee Hang-joo was an important figure in Korea.
