In the coming decades, humanity's exploration and utilization of space will deepen. In 2040, the spaceship "New Region" utilizing spatial distortion technology disappears near Neptune. In 2047, "New Region" suddenly sends a signal back from Neptune, seemingly a plea for help, prompting Dr. Will (played by Sam Neill), who designed the New Region, to be tasked with boarding the rescue ship "Lewis and Clark" to go to the rescue. The captain, Miller (played by Laurence Fishburne), is not very friendly, but fortunately, the Lewis and Clark quickly docks with the New Region as planned. Although life scans show that the New Region is filled with signs of life, the rescue team finds all crew members dead or missing after searching. The oscillations caused by the core power part that creates a black hole on the New Region have damaged the hull of the Lewis and Clark, forcing the rescue team to remain temporarily.
