Francesca Johnson (played by Meryl Streep) has passed away, leaving behind a will that asks her children to scatter her ashes at Rosman Bridge. The confused children rummage through their mother's belongings, uncovering a touching romance from her life. One summer day in 1965, housewife Francesca sends off her husband Richard (played by Jim Haynie) and children, and is left alone to do household chores. Photographer Robert Kincaid (played by Clint Eastwood) accidentally comes here, asking her for directions to Rosman Bridge. Stirred from her calm state, she takes him to the bridge. After finishing his work for the day, he thanks her with a wildflower and accepts her invitation to dinner. After he leaves in the early hours of the next morning, she returns to Rosman Bridge with reluctance and nails a note to the bridge, inviting him to dinner again. He accepts the invitation once more. The two meet at Rosman Bridge, and a fiery love ignites in their hearts. He asks her to leave with him, but she cannot part with her current family and worldly happiness. He departs sadly. More than ten years later, Richard, who deeply loved Francesca, passes away. Three years later, she receives news of Robert's death. He left most of his belongings to her and requested to have his ashes scattered at Rosman Bridge.
