The paper effigy store worker Zhu Hongli (played by Sammo Hung) was raised by his uncle, the Taoist priest (played by Lam Ching-Ying). Although Zhu Hongli has not mastered much of the Taoist arts and often acts clumsily, he has a righteous heart. He refuses to burden his betrothed Ah Yun (played by Cherie Chung), often giving her the cold shoulder. Zhu Hongli's friend Ma Linxiang (played by Wu Ma) goes out looking for adventure, but when he returns home, he is found dead, along with Ma Linxiang's pregnant wife and several male companions. Zhu Hongli suspects foul play and investigates, but finds nothing. A few days later, the vengeful spirit of Ma Linxiang comes to Zhu Hongli for help. It turns out that Ma Linxiang was not dead when he returned home; he had made a desperate move to steal the ancestral burial items but was unexpectedly killed by his accomplices. Disheartened, Zhu Hongli is unable to resist the spirit's pleas for revenge and asks his uncle to perform a ritual to help his friend. However, he ends up losing his own life in the process. Heartbroken, Ah Yun, guided by the uncle, plans to outsmart the ghostly enforcers and reclaim Zhu Hongli's soul.
