Louis XIV (played by Pierce Brosnan), despite having established his empire, struggled to find an heir to inherit his throne. One day, he learned that the power of mermaids could grant humans eternal life. Thus, Louis XIV sent his capable subordinate Yves (played by Benjamin Walker) on a maritime expedition, ultimately succeeding in bringing back a mermaid (played by Fan Bingbing), whom he imprisoned. An ordinary girl named Mary (played by Kaya Scodelario) was suddenly brought to the palace one day, and in fact, her true identity is Louis XIV's illegitimate daughter. When Louis XIV faced financial troubles, he decided to use Mary to arrange a marriage to resolve his economic crisis. Mary met the mermaid, and a genuine friendship gradually developed between them, while at the same time, Mary fell in love with Yves, the one tasked with guarding the mermaid.
