Before the New Year, the windows of the huge city glow from inside with colorful Christmas lights. It seems that each of these decorations carefully guards the cherished holiday. It seems that each of them awaits the fulfillment of New Year’s wishes… The silhouette of the elderly woman by one of the windows of an old Moscow house has certainly become familiar to the neighbors in the yard, like something unchanging. Sofia Ivanovna has not gotten out of her chair for ten years; she spends whole days looking out the window, gluing touching figures out of paper, and listening to Dickens, whom her only daughter Tanya reads aloud to her. The sole heiress, Tanya, who is supposed to pass the treasures on to her daughter, seems to have reconciled with the position of the old maiden, and her whole life consists only of caring for her sick mother. Perhaps these women would have spent a lot of quiet, secluded years together in their cozy apartment if on one of the pre-New Year evenings Sofia Ivanovna had not decided… to die. Which she informed her daughter about. And so much did Sofia Ivanovna want her daughter to be happy, and Tanya wanted so much for her mom to be at peace… And so the New Year was approaching, that outside the window of the old Moscow apartment, the most real New Year’s miracles were beginning...
